Their offense scored four touchdowns in just offensive plays. Their special teams blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Their defense held Flomaton to minus yardage well into the second half.
Needless to say the Brewton Middle School Tigers football got a well-rounded performance as well as a 33-6 win over the visiting Flomaton Hurricanes Thursday.
For the second straight week, BMS (4-0) did not have its hands on the ball long. The Tigers ran just 18 plays for the second game in a row.
Unlike the previous week where one good offensive drive rescued BMS to an 8-6 win over Monroe County, the Tigers struck quickly and often against Flomaton.
Although BMS went three plays and out on its first offensive series, it needed just one play to cash in on its second series when Jaren Jackson broke loose for a 39-yard touchdown run. Wil Riggs booted the first of his three extra points to make it 7-0 with 3:51 left in the quarter.
Flomaton, which managed just minus six yards in the first half, tried to catch the Tigers napping on special teams on its second series when it unsuccessfully tried a fake punt.
BMS took over at the Hurricanes' 35-yard line. The Tigers scored six plays later when Riggs threw a 10-yard touchdown strike to Jackson. Riggs tacked on the PAT to make it 14-0 just seconds into the second quarter.
The BMS defense continued to make life tough on the visitors moments later when Conner Denton intercepted a pass at the Flomaton 44.
That turnover was converted into seven more points three plays later when Jackson pulled away for a 37-yard touchdown run. Riggs' kick made it 21-0 with 1:55 left in the half. It also marked the last touch for Jackson, who ran for 87 yards on just six attempts in the first half.
The BMS special teams got into the scoring act on Flomaton's opening series of the second half when Dakota Schultz blocked a punt and returned it 22 yards for another score that made it 27-0. This time Riggs came up short on the PAT.
The Tigers continued to make a short field for themselves when Anthony Herbert picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. While that score was nullified due to an illegal block, Herbert and BMS got the touchdown
back when he scored on a
two-yard run. A missed conversion attempt left the score at
33-0.
Flomaton was unable to cross midfield and did not reach positive yardage until its last series of the game. Although it came at the expense of mostly BMS reserves, Flomaton strung together a 14-play, 65-yard scoring march that ended with a two-yard touchdown run. The possession ate up all but 16 seconds of the fourth quarter.
The Tigers head on the road this Thursday for a 6 p.m. game at Carver.
