The Brewton area is mourning the death of Earl Hagood &#8220Buddy” Weaver, businessman and community leader who died Wednesday, Sept. 27, at his home in Brewton at the age of 67.
Weaver, a graduate and faithful supporter of Auburn University, served as president of the university's alumni association and as chairman of the Auburn University Foundation Board. He worked as interim vice president for alumni and development at the university from 1994 to 1995 and was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree for his service to the university. The Auburn University Alumni Association recently named Weaver as a recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Brewton area residents described Weaver as a man dedicated to community service, conservation efforts and to his family.
Weaver was a native of Brewton and graduated from T.R. Miller High School in 1957 at the top of his class. He studied education at his beloved Auburn and earned a bachelor's degree in 1962, a master's degree in 1964 and his doctorate in 1978. He owned Earl H. Weaver Management Services in addition to involvement in more than a dozen civic groups and organizations.
He was one of the founders of the Longleaf Alliance, a group of ecologists, foresters, wildlife biologists and landowners dedicated to improving longleaf forests.
Weaver is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Huxford Weaver; two daughters, Suzanne Weaver Zimmer (Jeff) of Montrose and Laura Weaver Grier (Tommy) of Aiken, S.C.; a sister, Anita Weaver Wall (Bernie) of Brewton; and five grandchildren, Allen Grier, Camilla Grier and Caroline Grier and Joshua and James Zimmer.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Union Cemetery in Brewton with the Rev. Ed Glaize officiating. The family requests that memorials be made to any charity of the donor's choosing.
