Firefighters risk lives for our safety
It could be the middle of the night, the crack of dawn or just as the family is sitting down to dinner.
Volunteer firefighters never know when they might get a call to help out in an emergency situation, but they are always ready and willing to step in and assist - and to save someone's life.
Our volunteer fire departments in the Brewton area work so hard to protect their neighbors and their communities - and they ask very little in return.
The protection they provide us can most importantly save lives but can also simply help us save money on insurance costs.
But the protection that volunteer firefighters offer comes at a price.
There are programs available to help fund departments, and the county also provides funding, but many volunteer firefighters take their own financial and physical risks when they take part in emergency situations.
And for the departments as a whole, the costs of insurance, equipment and transportation are high.
We owe a huge debt to the brave men and women who volunteer every day for everything from the simplest of tasks to the big risks of a major fire.
Those departments deserve our thanks and a pat on the back - but they could also use our financial assistance.
Just consider what their help means to you, your family and your property.
