Brewton City Council members will soon consider two rezoning requests for new businesses in town.
On Tuesday, council members will revisit the rezoning request from a financial institution for a new building on three parcels of land at 103, 105 and 109 East Jackson St. Last month the council set a public hearing on the rezoning for their regular meeting on Oct. 10.
On Monday, the Brewton Planning Commission approved a rezoning request for a new restaurant on the corner of U.S. 31 and Old Castleberry Road. That request now goes to city council members, who could vote to set a public hearing on the matter at their Tuesday meeting.
Rezoning requests must first go through the planning commission for approval, then go to a public hearing before the city council, which has final approval. Anyone interested in speaking in favor of or against a rezoning request can appear at the public hearing.
The financial institution involved in the East Jackson property has signed a confidentiality agreement, City Clerk John Angel said Thursday. &#8220I don't even know who it is,” he said.
Angel told council members last month the group &#8220wants to demolish Mom &Pops and the three residents at those locations to build a financial institution.”
The land would have to be rezoned from residential to general business.
Meanwhile, the planning commission has pre-approved a rezoning request from Gary Huff, who according to papers filed with the city wants to build an Oak's Caf
