Smoking law sees few problems
Take a deep breath next time you're in a restaurant or business in Brewton. Now that the city's new no-smoking law is in effect, you can do so without breathing in harmful cigarette smoke.
Business owners and their customers have spent the past week getting accustomed to the new law, and while no change is perfect, so far things seem to be going well.
As of last week, city officials had heard no complaints about the new ordinance, although some restaurants had customers who complained.
But most likely they will all get used to the change soon - especially since East Brewton's own no-smoking law goes into effect Nov. 1.
Brewton, East Brewton and Flomaton are among the first cities in our state to enact no-smoking laws.
We're proud that our city officials in these communities have made the health of their citizens - especially the workers who would be around cigarette smoke the most - a priority.
We understand the concerns of smokers who feel their rights are being infringed upon, but those who do smoke have opportunities to do so - just not in public buildings, restaurants or businesses. And that's fair, especially to those who don't have much control over the air they breathe and who want to live and work in a healthy environment.
As we all get used to this new ordinance, we may see some bumps in the road. But so far, things seem to be going smoothly.
So take a deep breath. We've certainly come a long way, baby.
