Students at W.S. Neal High School were treated to a visit from the U.S. Army on Monday.
The 18-wheel vehicle stationed on the campus at the school houses simulator equipment that allows students and opportunity to experience the feel of Apache helicopters, tanks and 9mm weapons as well as video simulations of emergency response tactics.
Students sat in a simulated cockpit of an Apache helicopter and were issued orders by personnel on flying and shooting and various targets in air defense maneuvers.
A tank simulator allowed students and opportunity to feel the confinement of the vessel while targeting enemy defenses and were also able to fire 9mm weapons in a weapon range simulation.
Recruiters for the Brewton office of the U.S. Army were also on hand for the event. Sgt. Vasharn Simmons has been enlisted with the Army for 16 years and Staff Sgt. Michael Waryas has a 12-year service record with both serving as recruiters.
Grayson Hammac, a recent enlistee with the Army, was also on hand for the day's activities. He is home on medical leave but will return to Ft. Eustis, Va., to continue AIT training next week.
Students in grades nine through 12 were allowed to tour the facility with more than 250 taking advantage of the event, Shell said.
