Democratic incumbent Pat Lindsey held the lead at presstime in his fight to keep his seat against Republican challenger John McMillan.
Lindsey carried Escambia, Choctaw and Clarke counties, while McMillan won Mobile and Baldwin counties. Results were not available for Monroe and Conecuh counties.
Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Bob Riley easily won re-election Tuesday, beating Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.
With 78 percent of precincts reporting statewide, Riley had 56 percent of the vote. He also won Escambia County with 59 percent of the vote.
The win was not a surprise, as Riley had led in polls for several weeks.
Voters in Escambia County also approved a measure to give the county commission control over creating nuisance laws and voted to eliminate the county's costly supermunerary system. Eliminating the system will allow some county officials to take part in the state retirement plan instead.
In other statewide races, former Gov. Jim Folsom was leading Republican opponent Luther Strange with 52 percent of the vote as of press time. In the attorney general's race, Republican incumbent Troy King was leading Mobile District Attorney John Tyson Jr.
U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Ala., easily won re-election in the state's 1st Congressional district.
Beth Chapman was the projected winner in the secretary of state's race, beating incumbent Democrat Nancy Worley.
Democrat Ron Sparks was re-elected agriculture commissioner, and Republican Kay Ivey was re-elected treasurer over Democrat Steve Segrest.
Atmore native Lyn Stuart was the projected winner in the Supreme Court Place 3 race, while Democrat Sue Bell Cobb was leading in the race for Supreme Court chief justice.
