Students in the family and consumer science class at T.R. Miller High School are doing their part to feed the hungry this holiday season.
With an average of 18 items per student, the two classes, combined with other classes, collected more than 1,200 items, Lovelady said.
Following the collection of non-perishable items by the group, the items were loaded and delivered to food banks in the Brewton and Flomaton areas.
The project was initially kicked off by an inspiration from the Family Career and Community Leaders of America club at T.R. Miller High School.
The Family Career and Community Leaders Club of American at the school constantly participates in events and projects that benefit the students as well as the community in which they live.
Recently the group held a cookoff that culminated a study of nutrition and proper food handling techniques.
Members of the consumer and family life science classes also have studies in their classes that center around nutrition, proper food handling techniques, and subjects including areas associated with managing family life.
Lisa Lovelady is in her first year teaching at T.R. Miller High School and instructs the class and acts as sponsor of the club.
