Our Opinion: Stop to give thanks for the year

Just one day before the Thanksgiving holiday, it's important to note just how much we have to be thankful for this year.
Our community is poised for great growth, assuming the plan for annexation proposed by the city council is approved by both the state Legislature and the U.S. Justice Department.
Even if that process takes longer than folks would hope, the fact that we have the potential to grow because so many people have moved close to our city is a milestone.
We continue to welcome new businesses to our community.
We can also be thankful that we have so many individuals and groups in our community that want to help others, from Habitat for Humanity to the Red Cross to YMCA to United Fund and everyone in between.
Just recently a group of students at Jefferson Davis Community College has started a project to fill backpacks for children in need.
They fill the backpacks with snacks and small meals that will help the children without singling them out as needy.
It's great to see so many young people on the road to a life filled with service.
We can also be thankful that our local sports teams have given us a year filled with exciting games. Although W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller football teams both ended their seasons last week, they showed great sportsmanship and made their schools proud with their performances this year.
We all have so much to be thankful for as we celebrate this holiday and prepare for the next one. We wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving with your families.
