Our Opinion: Everyone should go to meeting

We hope that Brewton city officials find themselves among a curious group of people on Tuesday afternoon.
That's the day the city council has scheduled a public hearing on a proposed annexation plan that would grow the city by about 70 percent.
City officials have invited the public to come and give input on the plan, which would add an estimated 1,300 people to Brewton's population and bring other changes as well.
One of the questions that has been raised about the new plan is how it would affect the city and county school systems. If students move from one system to another, it would certainly change enrollment in the schools - and that could affect the level of funding those schools receive.
Residents who might be annexed can ask questions about what city services they can expect with the new plan - and residents already in the city can ask how their services might be affected.
So far, we have supported the annexation plan because we believe growing the city of Brewton is the right course for the future, but we have questions about the proposal as well.
And we certainly encourage everyone to attend Tuesday's meeting to get more information about the plan and to voice their questions, comments and concerns.
The meeting will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the community center behind city hall.
If the council decides to agree to the annexation plan, they will not vote on the issue that day. The earliest they could vote on the plan is Dec. 12.
