The reinstatement of golf at W.S. Neal High School could become a reality within the next couple of months.
W.S. Neal last had a golf team in 2003, but no team has been fielded the last two years due to lack of numbers.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association requires four players for a school to be able to compete as a team. Five players can compete during a meet. There is no limit to the number of players a team can carry on its roster.
Hathcock said it is important for the school to offer golf, but at the same time does not want the school to field a team just for the sake of fielding one.
While no girls have currently expressed interest, Hathcock said high school golf offers many collegiate opportunities.
Hathcock, who coached tennis last spring at W.S. Neal, is projected to be the school's golf coach if a team is fielded. Hathcock previously coached golf at Hamilton High School and led that school to a state runner-up finish. He also had two individuals qualify for state competition.
all about golf, but I've played some on my own and I've coached it before,” said Hathcock.
Hathcock expects a decision on a potential golf team to be made by late January.
