The Coalition for a Healthier Escambia County has solved a transportation problem for children who need to go to physician appointments out of town.
Now they need the community's help to name the new van that will replace the KidOne transportation service. A total of $100 in gift certificates will be available to the winner of the name contest.
The coalition received a donation from the McMillan Trust and individuals in the county to help support the van, which will be able to transport children in need and their parents to doctors' appointments in other cities.
The coalition is leasing the van from Peach Ford.
Birmingham-based KidOne, faced with the need for financial cutbacks, pulled its service from Escambia, Conecuh and Monroe counties earlier this year. The coalition then stepped in to try to find a solution for Escambia County.
Tom Frazier will serve as the driver for the van.
Harrell said the transportation service is necessary for many children in Escambia County.
To participate in the naming contest, entrants must be age 12 or younger and be a resident of Escambia County.
Each entry to the Name the Van contest should be sent on a postcard to: Coalition for a Healthier Escambia County, Name the Van Contest, P.O. Box 908, Brewton, AL 36427.
The Brewton and Atmore chambers of commerce have each donated a $50 gift certificate to be awarded to the winning entry.
The deadline for entries is Dec 31.
A committee of coalition members will select the winning entry.
