A few tears were flowing even before the performance began Sunday afternoon.
But despite the stage fright, the Brewton Dance Studio Ballet Company's annual production of &#8220The Nutcracker” was a success.
I'm not sure how Ann Peevy, who has been directing the show for more than 15 years, is able to corral so many different age groups and personalities into a smooth performance, but it went off with hardly a hitch Sunday at the auditorium at Jefferson Davis Community College.
And yes, there were a few minor incidents - a peppermint who stepped right off the stage to find her mother, a clown who sat on stage a little longer than everyone else.
But whether a daughter was the Sugar Plum Fairy performing the entire show or a clown on stage for just a few moments, parents were proud.
And they should have been.
But, tucked in a corner of the auditorium with my camera, I was completely entertained for the two-hour show. As tulle skirts twirled and toe shoes tapped, little girls - and big girls - with bright personalities, beautiful smiles and sparkling stage presence showed off their talent and self-confidence.
Not every little ballerina is destined for Lincoln Center, but these young women certainly possess talent and poise for whatever they want to do in life.
