I've had enough. I'm sure if everyone were polled on the topic, they would admit that they have had enough too.
Although the circus that has surrounded the death and delayed funeral of Anna Nicole Smith has started to subside somewhat, there still remains an unordinary amount of news coverage for this woman.
I realize she was a celebrity, but honestly, what was she really famous for except showing off her body and acting ditzy in public?
I can understand some of the publicity surrounding her death. If I were suing some deceased millionaire's family, I'd probably make the news too. Shows like Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, and I'm sure many others have gone a little crazy with the coverage. I don't read National Enquirer or The Star, but I'm sure they have had extensive coverage of the deceased blonde bombshell.
What really gripes me is the amount of time credible news shows like The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and other networks are spending on the subject.
Just to show you how ridiculous I think the media coverage for this woman has been, take a look at some facts I dug up.
On Jan. 16, Benny Parsons died. Now I don't usually travel in the circle of folks that follow NASCAR activities closely, but I had heard of him before. He was the winner of the Winston Cup, a coveted award, back in 1973. Ask any NASCAR fan, and I'll be they would tell you Mr. Parsons deserved way more coverage that Ms. Smith.
Also on Jan. 16, Betty Trezza passed away. You probably wouldn't recognize her unless you had watched &#8220A League of Their Own”. She was an original member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. You'd probably recognize her character as &#8220Betty Spaghetti” in the movie. She certainly deserved a little more media attention, in her life and at her death. What a contribution she made that has been of benefit to women for years.
And, I for one am certain that Joseph Barbera's death in December deserved more attention. For a man who created the cartoons Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones and even The Smurfs, you'd think there would have been a little more publicity. Shoot, I still say &#8220Yabba-Dabba-Doo” every once in a while.
At any rate, I fully expect that when I die there won't be a big hullabaloo over my passing. I've always told folks that I'm close to just a few things I want done when I do kick the bucket. I don't want flowers at my funeral. I want balloons. I figure there will be enough frivolity at the funeral so it might as well be a party atmosphere from the beginning. Also, if you go back to the house after I've been put away, you'll find some cold ‘tater salad on the table. Or at least there better be. I've told enough folks that's what I want so there should be at least a couple of bowls sitting on the table or in the fridge.
Everyone's death is sorrowful for someone. I do feel that Anna Nicole deserves to be remembered. But I just as soon forget some of the things I've been reminded of about her in the past few weeks.
I have made a vow to turn the channel when anything concerning her law suits, sordid past, mystery daddy of her baby or other such hooey comes on my television. If you've had enough, I hope you'll do the same.
