The Escambia County Sheriff's Department has a vacant position.
Mike Murphy, who served 21 years with the sheriff's department, was appointed police chief of Loxley in Baldwin County during last Monday's meeting of the Loxley Town Council.
The Atmore native, a graduate of Troy University, began working as a dispatcher for the sheriff's department and worked his way up until he had reached the position of major.
In a statement to Loxley Town Council members, Murphy said he felt he was the man for the job. &#8220I feel that my experience, education, knowledge, skills and training have certainly prepared me for a position like this,” Murphy said in the statement.
Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith could not be reached for comment Friday.
