Rain doesn't seem to be in our forecast anytime soon - which makes for pretty spring days but which can wreak havoc for forestry officials and firefighters.
Escambia County is one of several in our area that are under a fire alert issued by the Alabama Forestry Commission.
Just last week, the commission responded to several brush fires. Since March, the commission has responded to 780 wildfires across the state that have burned nearly 19,000 acres of land. The county has seen 18 fires this month, burning 150 acres.
We all need to take care to avoid causing brush fires.
Inside the Brewton city limits, a no-burn policy is always in effect. East Brewton residents have also been urged not to burn anything at all until the fire alert is lifted.
Our timberland is an important resource for our area - recreationally and economically. We need to do all we can to protect it.
