A quiet group of children gathered in the waiting area at the Lower Alabama Pediatrics office of Dr. Marsha Raulerson Tuesday to hear a story about Harry the Dirty Dog.
U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, Ala., read the story to an intent group of children during a visit through Escambia County.
Bonner was referring to Raulerson's part in the Reach Out and Read program she began in her office 13 years ago.
At the conclusion of his visit with the children, Bonner explained how important learning to read can be.
Raulerson presented two books to Bonner as gifts to his children at the end of his visit - and also allowed him to keep &#8220Harry the Dirty Dog” for his own collection.
According to the Reach Out and Read program information provided by Raulerson, nearly 35,000 children participate in the program with more than 50,000 new books distributed annually through the program.
Bonner's district includes eight locations with nearly 13,000 children participating annually. Other offices currently participating in the early literacy program include the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore, North Baldwin Pediatrics in Bay Minette, four Mobile area offices as well as one in Dothan.
