Kathryn Tucker Windham, a master storyteller, will be at the Brewton Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday to work her magic telling some good old Southern stories.
Windham is the author of 24 books. She is a playwright, photographer and media personality. Although some people believe she writes only ghost stories, she has a range of writings to her credit, including several cookbooks and her collection of stories about the social life of Southern Alabama.
She began her writing career at the age of 12 as movie editor for her cousin's newspaper, The Thomasville Times. She received her bachelor's degree from Huntingdon College and went to work as a reporter for the Alabama Journal. She was perhaps the first woman reporter to cover the police beat in a major newspaper in the South.
She was also employed with The Birmingham News and The Selma Times-Journal, where she won several Associated Press Awards.
She left the newspaper business in 1973 and has won a number of awards over the years. The Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum in Thomasville has been dedicated in her honor.
