As they approach high school graduation, area seniors have reached a turning point, that fork in the road at which they will spread their wings and head into the real world.
Graduation always seems the perfect time to pull out those sorts of cliches and mixed metaphors, but those tired phrases do have the ring of truth to them.
Brewton area graduates have already accomplished great things in their short lives. At honors ceremonies last week for both W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller high schools, students were recognized for achievements in every subject, from algebra to mechanics. They received hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of scholarships. Many are headed to college and some into new careers.
Those of us who have been in their place remember fondly when the world was so wide with possibility.
To be sure, their future is uncertain, but graduates today have so many choices - many good, some bad.
We hope that some of these graduates will continue to make their home in Brewton or will return one day to make their homes and raise their families.
The success so many have already shown proves they will be valuable assets to our community as they grow and learn and contribute even more.
Their wide range of possibilities should give all of us hope.
After all, as the cliche goes, they are the future.
