Kudos to festival organizers
The 27th annual Blueberry Festival is history and applause should be given to coordinators of the event.
Although heat was a factor during the day, festivalgoers came out by the thousands to enjoy food, entertainment and shopping. Some estimates put the visitors to Burnt Corn Park in downtown Brewton near the 15,000 mark.
Judy Crane and Michelle Jones with the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce worked countless hours coordinating spaces, vendors, and entertainment schedules to create a smoothly run festival. There efforts paid off in great rewards with children and adults alike enjoying the festival events.
The members of the Brewton Kiwanis Club met the challenge of heat and provided bowls of the group's famous blueberry cobbler as well as blueberry ice cream. The sweet treats were a delightful tradition to find at the festival.
The presence of the Brewton Police did not go unnoticed. Their protection and service during the festival with traffic and crowd control was given without question and with much grace. Officers were stationed throughout the parking and travel areas directing traffic in full uniform as they battled high temperatures and thousands of cars and pedestrians. The work from the entire department is to be commended.
The downtown location of the annual event saw it's second year of success. Although many decry the move, the new location certainly puts the event right in the heart of Brewton. The number of visitors to the festival grew this year and organizers are predicting a bright future for the festival.
