As we enter week five of the AHSAA football schedule — my, how time has already flown by — we enter the non-region week of the schedule before the teams will begin the final four weeks of region play in weeks six-nine and then close out their schedule with non-region opponents in week 10.
As we go into the week five schedule, let’s take a look at the current standings in class 4A region 1: As of right now, there is a two-way tie for the top two spots and a two-way tie for spots three and four.
Escambia County and Thomasville have the top two spots followed by Jackson and T.R. Miller who are tied for the spots of three and four. Right now, W.S. Neal is just outside of the top four and is tied with Hillcrest at 1-2 in the region.
Escambia County has come out of the gate undefeated overall and has already defeated both T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal. The key region game, if the standings are the same as they are now, will be Oct. 12, when Thomasville comes to Escambia County, but back to Miller and Neal.
T.R. Miller will get right back into region play in week six against Thomasville at home. Thomasville just beat W.S. Neal last week, so the Tigers know they will be up for a challenge at home when Thomasville comes in.
Things do not get any easier for the Tigers in week seven when they have to travel for Jackson.
W.S. Neal will then have Jackson at home the next week at home. Both teams know what week nine holds as the annual Battle of Murder Creek comes. This game could be pivotal for both teams. The winner could find itself with a playoff berth, while the loser of the game may miss the playoffs.
So all in all, the region games for both T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal along with the results of some key other region games could play a giant role in the playoff lives of T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal.
As for this weeks games, I look for both area teams to improve their records in the win column. I look for T.R. Miller to continue to improve on the offensive side of the ball and win this week 28-14, and I also look for the W.S. Neal Blue Eagle’s running game to have a great game this week and to win 34-14.
Good luck to all area teams this coming week and until Sunday when we meet again, thanks and God bless.
