So all we got was some much-needed rain from subtropical depression No. 10, while Tropical Depression Jerry is hanging out in the Atlantic somewhere today, with little threat to land.
But the storm that dumped so much wonderful water on our community over the weekend was another reminder that we need to be prepared, always, for hurricane season.
We still have several weeks left of this season, and we all know that anything can happen. Keeping your family aware of the dangers of storms, making sure you have your own evacuation route mapped out if necessary and an emergency kit at home are essential to life so close to the coast.
But we should also remind our residents that being prepared as a community is just as important as being prepared individually.
Our Red Cross chapter, which runs the shelters that house residents and coastal evacuees when a storm hits, needs more volunteers — not only during hurricane season but throughout the year.
We need residents to step up and be trained to help their neighbors.
Hopefully, we won’t need those shelters this year. But you can rest assured that we will need them in the future, and volunteering now and getting some training under your belt will help to make those future storms much smoother for everyone in the community.
