Georgia-Pacific’s motto is “making life’s simple necessities.”
And a quick survey of your kitchen cabinets might reveal that you have many of those necessary products, from paper towels to Dixie cups.
GP, which on Sept. 28 took over Brewton’s container mill from Smurfit-Stone, has consumer brands in about 80 percent of American homes, according to the company.
Among the paper towel and bath tissue brands GP produces: Angel Soft, Quilted Northern, Soft’N’Gentle, Brawny, Sparkle, Mardi Gras and So-Dri.
GP also makes Dixie paper cups. cup dispensers, plates and plastic cutlery, as well as several paper products for home and office.
But consumer products are just the tip of the iceberg for GP, which also makes a variety of building and construction products, including engineered lumber; firedoor components; gypsum boards and drywall; hardboard and thin medium-density fiberboard; industrial plaster; lumber; oriented strand board; Plytanium plywood; tileboard; wall paneling; and wood fiberboard.
Georgia-Pacific’s other businesses include bleached board and kraft paper, cellulose and pulp, chemicals and packaging.
The Brewton mill falls under GP’s bleached board and pulp businesses, Ruse said.
GP bought the Brewton mill from Smurfit-Stone for $355 million, and the deal was finalized at the end of September.
Georgia-Pacific is a division of the privately held Koch Industries, which is involved in mining and other industries.
