In a matter of moments smoke from a house fire can fill the lungs of a human. Those moments are the ones that matter if a life is to be saved in the event of a house fire.
The Brewton Fire Department is focusing this week’s fire prevention observation on practicing an escape plan in the home.
Weaver said Brewton Fire Department firefighters will be visiting area schools this week to teach children about fire safety and prevention and how to escape their home in the event of a fire.
Those classes who are visited by firefighters won’t be the only people exposed to the information provided by the Brewton Fire Department.
The Brewton Fire Department’s open house will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the fire station on St. Nicholas Avenue.
Weaver said the BFD strives to help the residents of Brewton become knowledgeable about fire safety and the importance of smoke alarms.
Weaver said those who need assistance should call the fire department at 867-7165. The BFD will provide batteries; smoke alarms and installation free of charge.
