Football is king in Alabama and in Brewton — especially if it is the rivalry of W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller in the annual Battle of Murder Creek.
This past Saturday I had the chance to cover the county tournament in volleyball at W.S. Neal. The opening game of the tournament was between our two area schools and let me tell you something, if you missed it, you missed a very good and exciting game.
I have to admit, volleyball is one sport that is very foreign to me in covering, but on Saturday I really felt involved and excited to be there. I had never seen a more exciting game.
Volleyball is a fairly new sport in this area and does not get very much fan support other than the parents of the players.
Saturday’s game was not much different, but I can say that the fans who were in attendance were very involved and very supportive of their team.
The game was very intense on both sides and W.S. Neal took game one and T.R. Miller came back and won the next two to take the match. Earlier in the year, W.S. Neal beat Miller 3-1 at home for their first win over the Tigers.
Both coaches at the two schools should be commended in the jobs that they have done. Coach Greg White at Miller has done a great job in his first season and coach Britney Shelly has done a great job during her young tenure.
While Miller may have taken the county tournament on Saturday, both teams were scheduled to meet again in the area tournament that took place yesterday at T.R. Miller. (Scores and stats will be in Sunday’s edition)
Congratulations to both teams and coaches for a great season.
