Wow! What a game! That is all I can say. Two years in a row and both games come down to the final seconds to decide a winner. Or as in this year's case, overtime.
As I heard from both coaches, both teams played their hearts and guts out and if it was because one team had to win and the other had to lose, both teams deserved to win. And in a way they did.
Both teams now have a chance to finish their regular seasons out with a win and with a winning record and now both teams can boast of making the playoffs. W.S. Neal coach Blaine Hathcock said it right after Friday nights win of how well things can change. His Eagles were on the outside looking in at the playoffs and now they have the No. 3 seed in the playoffs and Miller has the No. 4. With the playoff advancements of both teams, Miller's streak of 24 consecutive seasons of making the playoffs stays intact.
But back to the game, it was truly a remarkable game and that's what a rivalry game should be.
When you have two schools with the close proximity as Miller and Neal are to each other and the interaction between the two communities, it is only right for the game to have been played the way it did.
Both teams showed class as well as the fans of both teams and I congratulate the towns of Brewton and East Brewton as well as the two schools for that.
Also, I was glad to see the excitement over the new trophy in the rivalry.
It was such a great way to start the new tradition and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
Thanks to Melanie McGougin and her design and donation of the trophy and presentation to the winning team. I hope we can continue to keep this new tradition going.
I want to congratulate coach Hathcock and the W.S. Neal team on a great win and to coach Riggs and his Tigers on a game well played.
I wish both the teams the best of luck as they end the regular season next week and then as they head north for the playoffs.
Also, good luck to all area teams this week as they finish up their regular seasons. Until Wednesday, God Bless!
