The reality of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Brewton is getting closer as officials with the Arkansas-based company committed to groundbreaking by year's end, with the completion of construction is expected by fall 2009.
The Supercenter will be built on U.S. 31 and will replace the 2041 Douglas Ave. store. The construction contract has been awarded to Shannon Stroebel and Weaver of Auburn.
The presence of Wal-Mart is expected to continue economic growth in Brewton and will help Brewton to remain a retail center for our area, Jennings said.
Jennings works as a pharmacist at the current store. He has recused himself from any votes taken on the city council about the project, as has Councilman Henry Uptagrafft, whose wife works at the store.
The Supercenter is expected to be constructed with colonial-style architecture and will be approximately 187,000 feet, more than twice the size of the current store.
The architecture of the store is an important component of the planning process of any new construction, said Cindi Marsiglio, senior manager of public affairs.
