After a 4-22 season record last year and a 2-14 conference record, things can only get better for Jefferson Davis Community College's basketball team and head coach Allen Gainer.
JDCC has six returning players from last year's squad. Those returning six are Maurice Edmondson (6-6, soph. Douglas, Ga.), Norman Griffin (6-2, soph. Mobile), Quintereal Kelley (6-0, soph. Goodwater), Justin Owens (6-5, soph. Concord, Ga.), Donald Smith (6-2, soph. Goodwater) and Brandon Stewart (6-1, soph. Niceville, Fla.).
Other players on this year's team include Will DuPont (6-3, fresh. Pensacola, Fla.), who is ineligible until next term, Damien Jackson (6-2, fresh. Brewton), Richard Johnson (6-4, fresh. Evergreen) who is also ineligible until the spring term, Ricco McMillon (6-2, fresh. Gretna, Fla.) and Julius Moses (6-1, fresh. Daleville).
Gainer said a lot of people said that he may have some misfortune in losing six guys from last year, but the season will be determined with the rebounding early in the season and that the group that he has left in determined to compete.
Edmonson was second in scoring and first in rebounding last year for the Warhawks.
Another player is Donald Smith.
Norman Griffin will be handling the point guard position for JDCC. Gainer said the decisions he will make with the fast break would determine how the season goes for the Warhawks.
Quintereal Kelley will be a big factor on defense and offense.
Justin Owens is the other post player and has not played much basketball as he only played his senior year in high school.
The last sophomore is Brandon Stewart. Stewart had no playing time last year and went home.
One newcomer to the team is Ricco McMillon.
Damien Jackson from Brewton is on the Warhawk team this year and looks to add some depth at the point spot.
Julius Moses rounds out the Warhawks who are eligible at this time.
Will DuPont and Richard Johnson will be available after the end of the fall term for the Warhawks.
JDCC's schedule is difficult, Gainer said. Snead is in the top-10 in the country and Hanceville, Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Chattahoochee Valley have been ranked in the top-25 in the preseason polls.
Kyle Baggett of Brewton and Leroy Roberson are managers on the team this year and have been a big help, the coach said.
JDCC will have their first home game Nov. 13 and will be offering free pizza for all fans in attendance when they take on Pensacola Christian.
