Mr. John Wesley Smith Sr., 68, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007. He was a native and resident of Conecuh County. He was a member of the Old Field AME Zion Church in Evergreen and was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Smith and a brother, Herman Smith Jr.
He is survived by his companion, Mary Travis, of Evergreen; 11 sons, Jerome Smith, Herman Smith III, Carlos Smith, Travis Stallworth and Herbert Rankins, all of Evergreen, John Wesley (Boochie) Smith, Jr. of Rochester , N.Y., John Smith of Louisiana, Willie C. Smith of Monroeville and Johnny Drakeford and Ronnie Smith, both of Montgomery; four daughters, Mildred Elaine Likely of Jacksonville, N.C., Claudette Williams of Monroeville, Teresa Sumpter of Chicago and Anita Lee of Evergreen; two brothers, Nathaniel Smith of N.C. and Charles Smith of NY.; three sisters, Lucille (Wilbert) Walton of Brewton, Lizzie (Walter) Ballard of Riverdale, Ga., and Dorothy Smith of Jamaica Queens, N.Y.; one aunt, Annie L. Thomas of Belleville; five daughters-in-law, Yvetta Smith, Sylvia Smith, Monise Smith, Shontae Smith and Luvika Smith; one son-in-law, Derek Williams; 40 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at Old Field AME Zion Church in Evergreen, with the Rev. Elizabeth McCaskill officiating. Burial followed at Belleville Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Presley Fluker directing.
