Some say the road to heaven is paved with good intentions. For those who travel through Escambia County, the road to Flomaton is about to be paved with four lanes of asphalt.
The Escambia County Commission stepped in and began trying to come to an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to work out a plan to continue the project, Sanks said.
W.S. Newell and Sons of Montgomery has been awarded the contract to pave the proposed four-lane from Old Fannie Road to an area near Van Hoosen Road north of Flomaton, County Engineer Bill Bridges said. The cost of the project will be $7,595,088 with funding from federal, state and county coffers.
Although Bridges said there are things that could hold up the process, paving is expected to begin sometime in December.
The contract with Newell and Sons allows for 240 working days on the project, Sanks said.
In other business, Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith told Escambia County commissioners Monday of plans for the installation of generators at the Escambia County Detention Center.
Air Refrigeration of Brewton will complete the installation of the system at a cost of $83,500.
