With five months of planning time, the Brewton Relay for Life is officially under way.
The Relay for Life event has been planned for Saturday, April 26, 2009 on the grounds of the Brewton Area YMCA on Belleville Avenue.
DeGraaf, along with Wendi Huff and Brenda Kern, is already working to help ensure a successful Relay event. With no specific chairman in place, the trio is serving as co-chairwomen for the planning of the event.
Title sponsorship has already been secured with Southern Pine Electric Cooperative. The Cooperative has been the title sponsor of the event since 2000.
The member-owned cooperative became a title sponsor for the event and has continued their involvement to aid in raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
Committees are forming to complete plans for the event with a schedule of meetings already in place, DeGraaf said.
Already committed for the 2009 Relay for Life event are teams representing The Sportsman Club, Comfort Care Hospice. D.W. McMillan Hospital, Escambia County Courthouse, Georgia Pacific, Westgate Village and W.S. Neal High School.
The criteria for teams are simple, DeGraaf said.
Other criteria for teams include a $10 commitment fee from each member, which covers the cost of the Relay t-shirt, DeGraaf said. Individuals raise monies or teams can raise monies collectively. There is no minimum number of team members required; however, each team should have a their captain or representative attend team captain meetings.
All committee and team captains meetings will be held in the education center at D.W. McMillan Hospital, DeGraaf said. The first committee meeting is scheduled for noon Jan. 15, 2009 with the first captains meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2009.
