As the final four of the AHSAA state football playoffs come upon us Friday night, taking a look at the teams still alive in the 4A classification, Thomasville is the lone team from region one still alive.
Thomasville and Central Tuscaloosa are the two final teams in the southern bracket, as they will play this week in Tuscaloosa.
Deshler and Brooks are the northern teams, as they will take to the field this week in Deshler.
All four of the teams still alive in the playoffs are No. 1 seeds except for Brooks, who is a No. 2 seed.
Thomasville is 11-2, while Central Tuscaloosa is 13-0. Brooks is 12-1, and Deshler is 11-2.
In the other classifications, 1A, 2A, and 3A all have No. 1 seeds left. Class 5A has one No. 2 seed, as does 6A.
St. Paul's is the team in 5A, and Spain Park is in 6A.
There are 12 undefeated teams left in the playoffs out of the possible 24 teams still alive in the playoffs.
The 1A class has the most undefeated teams left in the playoffs with three as 4A has the least with one.
Three state champions from last year are still in the race to repeat this year as Sweet Water from 1A, Leroy from 2A and Prattville from 6A are still alive.
On a different note, Auburn won its sixth straight Iron Bowl this past weekend with a 17-10 victory over archrival Alabama.
Aside from the game, one interesting thing happened some people might not know about - an Auburn football player was bit by a dog in the end zone late in the game. It is actually not the first time a dog has tried biting an Auburn player. One game when Georgia was playing Auburn, Georgia's mascot UGA snapped at an Auburn player.
As I was watching the game, sports announcers kept mentioning the 41-year or so layoff that the game was not played.
At the time not knowing the fate of our own rivalry game in the Battle of Murder Creek, I thought it would be a shame if our rivalry was not played because of the scheduling conflict. But, thankfully, a decision was made to play the W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller game for the next two years.
