Despite some protest from an outdoor sign company, the Brewton City Council approved a new sign ordinance Tuesday that bans new billboards in the city limits.
Chuck Riley of Bill Salter Advertising, a regional billboard company, expressed disappointment with the new ordinance.
Riley said banning new billboards will hurt local businesses because so few spots are now available.
The Brewton Planning Commission has worked for months on the new ordinance. An earlier version did not ban billboards, but the council asked the commission to go back to the drawing board to include a ban.
