The new salaries for the incoming mayor and council in Brewton fall within the range of cities of similar size, according to a salary survey published by the Alabama League of Municipalities.
On Tuesday, the Brewton City Council approved new salaries for the office-holders who will be elected in November. State law requires an outgoing council to set the salaries for the incoming council.
The mayor will make $23,000 per year, up from $13,000, and council members will make $550 per month, or $6,600 per year, up from $425, or $5,100 per year.
Eight cities with a population between 5,000 and 6,000 reported their salaries to the League of Municipalities for its latest report, which was published in July 2007.
The figures available do not reflect any raises that may occur in the coming term.
The average mayor's salary for cities of that size is $21,125, with a range of $8,400 in Childersburg to $42,000 in Fultondale.
The average council member's salary for cities of that size is $5,207, with a range of $3,600 in Childersburg to $7,200 in Satsuma and Fayette.
