Wendi Huff believes in Relay for Life, not only for what it does for the community but what it can do to save lives.
Huff, who is co-chairwoman of the 2008 Relay for Life campaign, the American Cancer Society's annual fund-raising event.
Relay For Life teams are making plans to raise money through a variety of events and activities. The campaign will culminate with a daylong celebration on the grounds of the Brewton Area YMCA on April 26.
A team at Jefferson Davis Community College has already raised money.
Along with Huff, the 2008 Brewton Relay for Life committee includes Marcia DeGraaf, co-chairwoman in accounting and survivorship; Brenda Kern, co-chairwoman in sponsorship; Heather Kirkland, team recruit-Flomaton; Bobbie Ryals, luminaria chairman; Miriam McDaniel, on-line chairwoman; Jeff Kirkland, title sponsor; Pam Hambrick, titlesponsor; YMCA director Steven Dickey, logistics; and Vivian Layton of the YMCA.
Like Huff, DeGraaf has personal reasons for supporting the Relay.
The D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital team has already been working hard to raise money for this year's event.
DeGraaf, who is team leader at DWM, said team members have had a variety of events already this year.
This year's event has four corporate sponsors. Alabama Power Company, Bondurant Lumber and Hardware Inc. and Gulf Coast Cancer Center will join Southern Pine Electric Cooperative, which is the title sponsor.
There are 12 teams registered for the event. Teames include the Brewton Bridge Bunch, Brewton Elementary School, Brewton Sportsman Club, Comfort Care Hospice, D.W. McMillan Hospital, Georgia Pacific, Jefferson Davis Community College, McCall School, St. Mark Baptist Church, T.R. Miller High School, Westgate Village and W.S. Neal High School.
The Relay For Life event will be Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
