Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith is requesting assistance from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to oversee the investigation into the death of an Escambia County Detention Center inmate.
Carl McMillan, 32, of 116 East St., was pronounced dead at D.W. McMillan Hospital after being transported from the jail Friday.
McMillan's attorney, Mike Perry, received word of the death Friday morning.
Perry said he spoke with McMillan Thursday and said he was in good spirits.
Officials with the Escambia County Sheriffs Department say McMillan collapsed while dressing at the detention center at which time CPR was performed. The inmate is believed to have died from an apparent heart attack.
McMillan was awaiting trial after being arrested March 3. At the time of his arrest he was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and first degree kidnapping. Other charges against the inmate included domestic violence, third degree; harassment; and promoting prison contraband. He was being held at the jail on a $100,000 bond. Law enforcement officials in Georgia had placed a hold on McMillan for parole violations in that state.
McMillan's body was transported to the Department of Forensic Science in Mobile for an autopsy.
