A gathering on the lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse was held to honor those Americans who gave their lives in battle. The Memorial Day ceremony Monday marked the 20th anniversary of the observance for Escambia County.
Escambia County Veterans Officer Mike Hanks led the ceremonies and offered an explanation for the observance.
Also participating in the ceremony were members of the American Legion including commander Joe Dozier.
Hanks gave an account of the men and women who have died in combat during recent years.
Charles Jackson, a member of the American Legion, read the names of the soldiers from Escambia County who have lost their lives during battle. Names read during the honor roll call included those who died in World War I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and the current War on Terror.
Services also include the singing of the National Anthem by George Weaver and a devotional/prayer by WWII Veteran Samson Cheatham.
