Members of the 1165th Military Police unit, both past and present, will be in Fairhope for a special reunion on June 28.
Sgt. Frank Barnes, with the local National Guard said the unit is already scheduled to be in Fairhope at that time.
The members of the unit will eat and be entertained while they catch up on their fellow soldiers who served in Iraq.
The 1165th Military Police holds the distinction of receiving the top three citations given to National Guard units. The Presidential Citation is the highest citation an Army National Guard unit can receive. It was awarded for the two terms of deployment in Iraq. The initial deployment was in 2003. They were packed and ready to come home in April of 2004 when they received word that their tour had been extended. They finally were able to come back and landed at the airport at Fort Benning, Ga. on Sunday July 11, 2004. They arrived in Brewton on July 17, to a welcome and grateful community. Many residents lining the way through Brewton and East Brewton greeted them and welcomed them home.
The unit was also given the Meritorious Unit Commendation, which ranks the third highest citation awarded to a National Guard unit.
