A restoration project is underway at old Fort Crawford Park in East Brewton with volunteers working to help clean the park for public use.
On June 21, a group gathered to try and bring Fort Crawford back to life. Dewayne Carroll, Raymond Wiggins, Charlene Wiggins and Donald Jernigan, with the help of a tractor from Daniel's Home Improvement, got a good start on ridding the park of a lot of the junk that has accumulated.
Carroll said the volunteers are working to help restore pavillions and other areas of the park, but muscle alone will not accomplish the goal.
The park has spent several years in disrepair. City officials say a bathhouse, a concert stage and other playground-type equipment have been destroyed over the years.
City officials are currently in the process of securing a gate to place at the entrance of the park drive. The gate, under the supervision of the East Brewton City Council and police officers, will be locked at 8 p.m. and unlocked at 8 a.m. allowing limited access to the park area.
