The Brewton Board of Education voted Monday to negotiate with the city on a price for a piece of property for a new middle school.
The school board appointed board President Stephanie Walker, board member Terrell Neal and Superintendent Lynn Smith to talk with Mayor Ted Jennings about a parcel of land on U.S. 31 and Old Castleberry Road, near a city water tower.
The school board also voted to get an appraisal for the property.
School board members have been looking for property for a new middle school for more than two years. Initially, the school board hoped to build a school on a portion of the Dogwood Hills Golf Course, but city council members told school officials they would not sell any of that land.
The city council met behind closed doors in executive session Tuesday afternoon to discuss city-owned property, but they did not take any action after the session was over.
State law allows local governments to discuss property in executive session.
