Have you prepared your will? Do you know what safety measures to make to protect your property for your heirs? Are you familiar with Gift Tax Law?
In our country, less that 40 percent of our citizens have made an estate plan for the distribution of their assets after they die. Even fewer young couples have developed a will to cover the guardianship of their children should both parents die at the same time.
Among African Americans, 83 percent have not left a will of any kind. Why is this problem?
If you do not leave instructions in the form of a will or a trust, the State of Alabama will decide who gets your property and who will gain custody of your children. The property decisions will be made by the Probate Judge in your county. Any legal heir can lay claim to your property if you do not leave a will. If no legal heirs can be found, the State of Alabama will take your property.
Mark your calendar and make plans to join all of Brewton and the surrounding areas for an Estate Planning Workshop, conducted by Rick Zapata, REA.
The workshop will be held on Monday, July 21st from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Escambia County Extension Auditorium on Ag Science Drive (right behind Southern Pine Electric Cooperative on U.S. Hwy. 31 south) in Brewton.
Regional Extension Agent, Rick Zapata, will answer your questions. He will cover Probate Law, Estate and Gift Taxes and Will Design. Other topics he will discuss include:
