T.R. Miller High School's auditorium was filled to near capacity as family and friends of Walter O. “Jake” Lewis gathered to pay a final tribute to one of Brewton's fallen sons.
Lewis' son, Walter D. Lewis, spoke about how important little things were to his father.
Lewis also expressed thanks to the community for allowing his father to be a part of their lives, which enriched his.
Matthews said Lewis will be remembered by everyone who met him because of the way he lived.
Lewis died July 14, 2008 at the age of 83. Funeral services were held Friday with burial following at Bergan Memorial Cemetery on Kirkland road.
Members of the honor guard for the Mobile County Sheriff's Department honored Lewis with a 21-gun salute prior to burial.
Lewis was a former Brewton city councilman, Brewton Police officer, a manager with the Brewton Country Club and a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.
He served the community in positions such as Scout Master and coach among many other community involvments. He was a deacon for the Reformed Church of America and a trustee with the AME Zion Church.
He was a graduate of Tuskeegee Institute with a degree in brick masonry.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Jewel Lewis of Brewton; one son, Walter D. Lewis of Odenville; and one daughter, Kimii Felder of Niceville, Fla.
