Industry and education are tops on the list of concerns for candidates for Brewton City Council district 2.
Incumbent Frank Cotten is being challenged by Frank Nalty for the position. Voting will take place Aug. 26.
Cotten has served as city councilman since 1988 and is currently the mayor pro-tem.
Cotten said he hopes to continue to help grow Brewton's economic development and to make the city cleaner.
Cotten, a native of Coffeeville, moved to Brewton in 1966. He graduated from Coffeeville High School and Livingston University and received a master's degree from Troy State University.
He is married to Shirley Cotton, a former teacher in the city school system. They have two children; Robbie and his wife, Margaret, and Kimberly, who is married to Wesley Brittan.
Cotten said he has served on many committees concerning city businesses.
He was employed in education 36 years serving as a coach, teacher, principal and transportation director until his retirement. He is presently employed with Jim Peach Motors.
Nalty said he would like to see Brewton's industrial base grow.
Nalty, 49, has served on the City of Brewton Planning Commission as vice president.
Nalty said he wants Brewton to grow its revenue, but not at the expense of residents.”
Nalty was born and raised in Brewton and is married to Allison B. Nalty who is a second grade teacher at W.S. Neal Elementary School. They have two children, Leslie, who is a student at Jefferson Davis Community College, and Mooney, a student at Brewton Middle School. He is a member of Saint Maurice Catholic Church. He is a graduate of T.R. Miller High School, Spring Hill College in Mobile, and Lake City Forest Ranger School.
His professional and community affiliations include, City of Brewton Planning Commission, vice-chairperson; Member of the Chamber of Commerce and past president; 1999 Citizen of the Year; Escambia County Soil and Water Conservation District, secretary; Escambia County Soil and Water Conservation Committee Chairman; an active participate and past president of the Brewton Rotary Club; member of the Alabama Forestry Association; member of the Alabama Treasure Forest Association; member of the Alabama Wildlife Association; member of the American tree Farm System; First Progressive Bank director; Ben Pearson Archery board member; Wildwoods Community board member; Gulf Coast Resource Conservation Development Area secretary; life member of the NRA; The Helene Mosley Treasure Forest Award for outstanding achievement in multiple use management of forest land; and Goodyear/NACD Conservation Award.
