Questions from readers are always a welcomed item to the sports desk, and this past week a good one came along.
I did a lot of searching in our archives here at The Brewton Standard and I think I came away with an answer. Hopefully it is the correct answer.
The question was:
This is a good question since our All-Stars have just finished their seasons and our 2008 Brewton Little League team came in fourth place and picked up a 9-8 win over Russellville in their second game of the tournament.
I emailed former Brewton Standard sports editor Bruce Hixon to see if he knew of any to go along with my research from our archives and this is how he responded:
According to a picture I took during Little League action this season at the Brewton Area YMCA Sports Park of the Little League championship banners on the outfield fence, there have been seven Brewton Little League teams that have won their district championship.
Now there are eight teams with the Brewton Little League 10- and 11-year-old team winning their tournament this year.
The other teams to have won their district tournaments are the 1997 11- and 12-year-olds, the 2001 11- and 12-year-olds, the 2004 11-year-old team won their district has co-champions, the 2004 9- and 10-year-old team, the 2005 11-year-old team, the 2006 and the 2007 10- and 11-year-olds team.
The 1997 team lost 11-3 to Westside and lost 11-0 to Phenix City. In 2001, our team lost 6-2 to Huntsville and 5-3 to Coosa County.
The 2004 11-year-old team did not advance to state after their co-championship due to that age group just starting up, or that was how it was explained to me.
Bruce said that in 2004 when Brewton was co-champs they did not go to state.
Little League had just started the age 10-11 division that year and he was not even sure there was a state tournament that year.
He knew they had one in 2005, they just played a district in 2004, playing a round-robin affair instead of bracket.
The 9- and 10-team lost 2-0 to Bay Minette and 6-3 to Russellville.
In 2005, the 11-year-olds lost 7-0 to Cottage Hill in eight innings and 16-5 to Tuscumbia.
The 2006 team lost to Huntsville by a score of 9-4 and 8-1 to Phenix City.
The 2007 Brewton Little League All-Star team lost to Russellville 5-2 and to Cottage Hill 9-7.
This year's team lost to Jackson 9-1 before beating Russellville 9-8 in eight innings. After winning their second game, they lost to Huntsville 12-3.
So, in reference to the question as far as I could find, Brewton's only state Little League tournament win was this year with the 9-8 win over Russellville making Brewton 1-14 in state level tournament play.
