Officials with Georgia-Pacific's Brewton mill owe $12,000 in fines to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management because of a paperwork mistake.
Daniel said requirements from ADEM state the systems have to be monitored on a monthly basis and proper documentation concerning the monitoring. “Those systems are monitored daily,” Daniel said. “The tests and monitoring was done, but the physical documentation was not done as required.”
Although the venting system is working properly, ADEM officials fined the company for the lack of proper paper work being completed.
During a recent inspection, ADEM officials found the lack of documentation dating back to December 2007. The result of that inspection found “minimal, if any excess emissions” according to ADEM reports.
Daniel said the mill has taken steps to prevent such fines in the future.
The Brewton mill of Georgia Pacific was operated previously as Smurfit-Stone Corporation and was purchased by the current owner last year. The cost for the purchase was $355 million. The mill employs about 450 workers.
