In just two weeks, this sports page will have the results and game stories from the first games of our high school football teams. Hopefully when that section comes out, I will have reported good things for our teams and they have captured their first win of the season.
Are you excited?
The start of football season in this area and state is always an anxiously awaited event, not just for our area high school teams, but also for our college teams.
The W.S. Neal Eagles will open their 2008 football season with a home game against Monroe County. This game will be the only game in the county that night, as it will be played on a Thursday. I expect a big crowd. Not only should the game boast the loyal Eagle fans of W.S. Neal and the fans of Monroeville, but I am sure fans from the other teams nearby will show their faces. There might even be some Clarke County Bulldog fans in attendance at the game scouting out the Eagles for the next week.
The next night in Atmore, T.R. Miller travels south on U.S. 31 to play the Escambia County Blue Devils. This is a big game for both schools and another big game for the county.
Fans from W.S. Neal may be in attendance since they will have already played on Thursday.
Last season, Escambia County picked up a long awaited win over rival T.R. Miller, 10-2.
The Tigers picked up a late safety in the game to avoid the shutout.
I am sure the players and coaches have been working hard in preparation for this season and they will represent their teams, schools and communities well.
We have been working hard ourselves here in the office in getting our 2008 football section ready and sent to the press in hopes that you will enjoy a preview of our teams, cheerleaders and band members.
I want to wish all teams, players and coaches best of luck on their new seasons safe travels this season.
