Most people are content to ride their lawn mowers in the process of cutting grass, but not so for Richard and Robin Royce.
The father and son team have come out with a new way to use their lawn mower. They have entered the world of lawn mower racing.
Richard Royce, who has a background dirt track stock car racing, has found a new way to get around the track.
The mowers used in this type of racing are far from ordinary, Richard said.
Richard said they started at the junkyard and worked up from there. They practically rebuild everything about the mower.
The nearest racetrack where the Royce team goes is in Andalusia at the Cottle Creek Super Speedway. There is no entry fee and no admission for spectators at the races, which occur every second and fourth Saturday of the month.
The Royce team consists of Richard Royce, who is the owner of the racer, Robin Royce, who is the driver, and Alan Wallace who is the pit crew. The team, like the larger races have sponsors. Current sponsors for the team are A &A Radiator Shop, Escambia Car Care and George's Old Time Barbecue.
Sponsor names are painted the front of the lawnmower and the team said they would like some more sponsors.
