My sister and I still joke about the posed photos of us as children, wearing matching polyester plaid jumpers that truly matched the 1970s era in which they were shot.
My mother takes offense, especially since she picked out the dresses. In her eyes, it didn't matter what we were wearing or how goofy our hair looked.
Now, with three children between us under 2, my sister and I understand.
In four and a half months, I have filled three photo cards and more with digital photos of my son, most of them the same shot taken just moments after the first … and second … and third.
No matter. I see something different in every one, the way his hair has started to stand on end or a different crookedness to his smile.
Perhaps that's what makes treasured family photos so special, the ability to capture the everyday goofiness of our children, the ordinary moments that make them extraordinary little people.
Last year The Brewton Standard held its first Summer Snapshots contest, an opportunity for our readers to showcase their best photography.
We received some beautiful photos, and so many were of children or grandchildren, playing on the beach or at the creek or in the backyard.
It was so difficult to choose a winner in that contest, because every photo had a human quality and uniqueness that almost always showed that the person behind the camera loved the person in front of it.
This year we're holding our contest again, and we invite readers to submit their favorite summertime shots, whether it's your children or grandchildren or a simple sunset you snap in your backyard.
We are offering prizes to first, second and third place - $100, $75 and $50 - and we'll try to publish at least one photo from every entrant.
The deadline is Friday, Sept. 5, so please hurry and submit your photos. You can e-mail them to newsroom@brewtonstandard.com, mail them to P.O. Box 887, Brewton, AL 36426, or drop them at our office at 407 St. Nicholas Ave.
