Runoff set for next week

Voters in Brewton's District 5 will head to the polls in less than a week to decide who will be the councilman serving their district.
Absentee ballots for the run-off election between Fred Barton and Terrence Breckenridge can still be obtained at Brewton City Hall.
Angel said several new voters have registered in the district just in time for the run-off election.
Angel said 757 voters are registered in District 5 and will be casting ballots at the Jefferson Davis Community College Museum to determine the new councilman for their district.
The runoff election came about as a result of the Aug. 16 municipal elections. Vying for the district 5 council seat were incumbent Henry Uptagrafft, Barton and Breckenridge.
At the end of the election, Uptagrafft had received 49 votes; Barton received 107 votes with Breckenridge receiving 92 votes.
With no candidate receiving 50 percent or more votes, a run-off was called for with Barton and Breckenridge on the ballot next week.
Fred Barton is a life-long resident of Brewton having retired from the Army National Guard and General Motors. He is a graduate of Southern Normal High School and attended Jefferson Davis Community College. He has been serving as a reserve deputy sheriff with the Escambia County Sheriffs Department for 24 years. He is an ordained deacon and attends New Life Holiness Apostolic Church. He is married to Cheryl Preyer Barton. They have three daughters and two granddaughters.
Terrence Breckenridge is a 39-year-old Brewton resident who has 22 years of experience in restaurant ownership and operations as well as six years experience in custom building and renovations with two years of retail experience. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church and is a director with the Greater Brewton Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Brewton Arts Council and serves as building committee member for the Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity organization. He is married to Becki Reynolds Breckenridge. He has one son, 8-year-old Jackson.
