A Brewton couple was killed Saturday night after an argument with an acquaintance in the Owassa commuity, and police are looking into a motive in the shootings.
Conecuh County sheriff's officials said Michael W. Williams, 28, of Owassa is being held on two counts of felony murder after the shooting deaths of Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, and Dennis James Smith, 40, both of Appleton Road in Brewton.
Various reports from witnesses, family and friends initially indicated the shooting might have been the result of an argument over the Alabama vs. Louisiana State University football game that day.
A relative of the Smiths, who asked not to be identified, said the incident is still confusing. The family member said as many as 10 versions of what happened havebeen circulating.
Conecuh County sheriff's officials said an E911 call came into the office at 7:29 p.m. Nov. 8 concerning a shooting at 3117 County Road 19 in Evergreen. Officers responded to the scene and found the Smiths dead.
Williams is being held at the Conecuh County Detention Center on a $2 million bond after being charged with two felony counts of murder.
Williams faces the possibility of two life sentences if convicted of the crimes.
